The Southeast Review is a semi-annual literary magazine, housed in the English Department at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. It is edited by the faculty and graduate students in the MA/Ph.D. Creative Writing Program.
Submissions - We receive approximately 400 manuscripts per month; we accept 1-2%. We want creative nonfiction, fiction, and poems. We publish many short-shorts in each issue.Work previously published cannot be considered. We accept simultaneous submissions but please inform us immediately if a piece has been accepted elsewhere. Please wait to hear back from the editors before sending more work. We acquire First North American Serial Rights, and payment is two contributors' copies. Publication is copyrighted.
World's Best Short Short Story Contest
Send up to three short short stories per submission. Each short-short should be no more than 500 words. Include your name and contact information on a very brief cover letter. Include your name on each story. Robert Olen Butler will judge. One winner will be chosen and awarded $500. The winner and nine finalists will be published in spring/summer.
The Southeast Review Poetry Contest
Send up to three poems, no more than 10 pages total. Include no more than one poem per page. Include your name and contact information on a very brief cover letter. Do not include personal identification information anywhere on the poems. Kim Addonizio will judge. One poem will be chosen as the winner and the author will be awarded $500. The winning poem and nine finalists will be published in spring/summer.
General Contest Guidelines
All submissions must be typed. The fee for both contests is $10 (US) per submission.
Postmark deadline: February 15.
For both contests, friends and current or former students of the judge and those who have been affiliated with Florida State University within the last five years are ineligible.
It is not necessary to send an SASE. Winners will be announced on the website in late spring. All contestants will receive the issue in which the winning submissions appear.
