Poetry Midwest

e- Zine - Poetry Midwest does not adhere to a specific artistic aesthetic, but aims to publish work which shows evidence of skillful craftsmanship. We look for pieces which push the boundary of language to capture the essence of experience with vivid imagery while avoiding didacticism.

Submissions - Poetry Midwest is published electronically three times a year and is freely distributable, provided it is not modified. Reproduction of the magazine is permitted as long as the magazine is not sold (either by itself or as part of a collection) and the entire text of the issue remains intact.

Send submissions by email. Send up to 3 poems OR 1 piece of micro-fiction or creative non-fiction under 300 words. Send your submission in the body of an email message with the subject line "Poetry Midwest Submission: your real name" where "your real name" is your actual name and not the name of your email account. Do not send email attachments. Messages containing email attachments will be deleted upon receipt. Do not send submissions via regular postal mail (aka snail mail). Submissions sent via postal mail will be returned unread.

Please include your postal mailing address & your telephone number in your submission. This information is for our files only and will not be sold or rented to any third party or agency.

We do not consider unsolicited fiction or creative non-fiction over 300 words, drama, book reviews or articles.

Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but not previously published work. Please include a short biographical statement not exceeding 50 words with your submission. If a submission is accepted for publication, authors will be notified by email within six months of submission. Payment for accepted work is the right to access an Adobe Acrobat PDF copy of the issue of Poetry Midwest in which accepted work appears.

Poetry Midwest is copyrighted but not registered. Poetry Midwest retains First North American Serial Rights, First Electronic Rights, Electronic Archival Rights (meaning the entire issue in which your work appears will be stored in electronic form for public inspection after original publication), and the right to reprint the entire issue in which your work appears, either in printed or electronic format. All other rights to works appearing in Poetry Midwest revert to said authors upon publication. This means that if we wish to republish a work in a format that separates the piece from the original issue, we must first seek your approval and consent. We ask acknowledgement for works subsequently published elsewhere after initially appearing in Poetry Midwest.

By submitting works for consideration, authors acknowledge that the works submitted are their own original works and are products of their own design. Authors further agree that we have the right to request additional information regarding the source(s) of the work and any related topic thereof. Authors also agree that if accepted and published work is later found to be a derivative of copyrighted material by another author or artist, then the submitting author, and not Poetry Ink Productions and/or Matthew W. Schmeer, will be liable for any and all penalties assessed under the jurisdiction of the courts of the United States of America and the conventions of International Copyright Law.
