Youth Short Story Contests


     Kay Snow Award

There are three categories of student writers: Grades 1-5; Grades 6-8; Grades 9-12. Fee per entry is $10 per entry for members of Willamette Writers and $15 per entry for non-members.

Writing categories are: Fiction - maximum 2500 words; Non-Fiction - maximum 2500 words; Poetry - Two complete poems may be submitted as one entry, any subject or form. Maximum length five pages for total entry; Juvenile Short Story or Article - Fiction or Non-Fiction - Maximum length 1500 words; and Screenwriting.

Deadline: Contest begins February 1 with a deadline of May 15.

Entry fee: None

Award: Student writers are awarded $50 for first place in three grade divisions, $20 for second place, and $10 for third place. The Liam Callen Memorial Award of $500 goes to the best overall contest entry in all divisions.


     The Killie Writing Competition

The Killie Writing Competition offers prizes of £3000, including the top prize of £1000 for the Killie Writer of the Year and two new Prizes - £350 for the Killie Young Writer of the Year and £250 for the Killie Gaelic Writing Award

The competition is open to anyone, anywhere and entries may be in any literary style.

You may post or email entries but you must comply with the rules or your entry will automaticaly be disqualified.

Entries open in April and close in September. Winners will be announced in December.

There will be a special awards ceremony for the winners in Kilmarnock in December.

Entries may be sent by email or by post. There is no limit to the number of entries but no-one may win more than one prize in any category.

Entries must be in English or Gaelic. Maximum word length is 5000. (Poetry is acceptable) Entries may be typed or handwritten. Double spacing is not necessary.

Two copies of postal entries are required. Email entries must conform to Windows Word format.

Entries must NOT have been previously published, nor be copied from published sources and MUST be the sole, UNAIDED, work of the entrant.

ALL entries must be supported by an entry form.

Copyright belongs to the author but www.killie.co.uk reserves the right to publish any entry without fee. Photographs of winners may be used for publicity purposes.

The organisers reserve the right to re-allocate prize money in exceptional circumstances.

Closing dates for entries is 6pm (GMT) on 30th September 2005.

Winners will be notified in December 2005.

FICTION

Writing For Children Competition

Short stories for Children under 10 with or without illustrations. Maximum 3000 words. Prize £200 and publication as a Leaf Book. Runners up publication as a Leaf Book. Please note all work sent to Leaf has a chance at publication. Entry Fee £5. Cheques made payable to ëLeafí. Please include a cover letter with your name and contact details or fill out an entry form which you can download below. Closing Date Febuary 28 2006.


     Paul A. Witty Outstanding Literature Award

Administerd by IRA's Special Interest Group, Reading for Gifted and Creative Students, this award recognizes excellence in original poetry or prose written by students.

Award: Elementary and secondary students whose work is selected will receive an award of not less than US$25 and a citation of merit.


Silver Lake College High School Literary Contest

The Silver Lake College English Department is sponsoring its third annual literary contest open to all high school students. Entrants may submit works in one or both categories of poetry and/or fiction. Three winners from each category will be selected.

To mark the occasion of the English department’s addition of a new creative writing major and minor, first prize winners will receive $2000 renewable Silver Lake College scholarship. In addition to the scholarships, first prize selections from both categories will be published in Silver Reflections, a literary journal published annually by Silver Lake College. Cash prizes of $75 for second and $50 for third place will also be awarded. All awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held Thursday, February 9, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. in the Generose Enrichment Center located on the Silver Lake College campus, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.


     SouthWest Writers: Young Writers Contest

Open to high school students living in New Mexico

There are four categories:

Award: Cash prizes are awarded in all four categories:

The Younkin-Rivera Prizes for Young Writers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale
This is a nationwide competition for creative writers aged 15-18.

Entries will be accepted during the month of April in the genres of poetry and prose.
