Great Questions Essay Competition

$2000 Cash Prize for Best Student Essay!
The essay competition is open to any Canadian student who will graduate from high school in June of the current school year or any undergraduate student. Home school and IBL students are also eligible. To participate you must be 21 years of age or younger.
Essays can be submitted to the Dominion Institute via email at anytime during the 2005-2006 school year up to May 15 at 12:00 P.M.. The best entry as determined by the Dominion Institute will win a $2000 cash prize.
Submission Criteria
Submissions to the essay competition should be no longer than 1500 words and demonstrate the following:
clearly and concisely identify the positions taken on the Great Questions (by the authors and students) and the reasoning behind each position
your teacher�s or supervisor�s name (You do not need to apply with your entire class, but you must have a teacher/supervisor support your submission)
support that position with an argument based on evidence, recognising that evidence is information which is relevant, accurate, and important
offer sound reasons for supporting some arguments and rejecting others
conclude with a restatement of the final position
observe the usual conventions of spelling, grammar, etc.
Submitting an Essay
All essay submissions will be done via email.
There are three categories of student writers: Grades 1-5; Grades 6-8; Grades 9-12. Fee per entry is $10 per entry for members of Willamette Writers and $15 per entry for non-members.
Writing categories are: Fiction - maximum 2500 words; Non-Fiction - maximum 2500 words; Poetry - Two complete poems may be submitted as one entry, any subject or form. Maximum length five pages for total entry; Juvenile Short Story or Article - Fiction or Non-Fiction - Maximum length 1500 words; and Screenwriting.
Deadline: Contest begins February 1 with a deadline of May 15.

Award: Student writers are awarded $50 for first place in three grade divisions, $20 for second place, and $10 for third place. The Liam Callen Memorial Award of $500 goes to the best overall contest entry in all divisions.
The Killie Writing Competition
The Killie Writing Competition offers prizes of £3000, including the top prize of £1000 for the Killie Writer of the Year and two new Prizes - £350 for the Killie Young Writer of the Year and £250 for the Killie Gaelic Writing Award

You may post or email entries but you must comply with the rules or your entry will automaticaly be disqualified.
Entries open in April and close in September. Winners will be announced in December.
There will be a special awards ceremony for the winners in Kilmarnock in December.
Entries may be sent by email or by post. There is no limit to the number of entries but no-one may win more than one prize in any category.
Entries must be in English or Gaelic. Maximum word length is 5000. (Poetry is acceptable) Entries may be typed or handwritten. Double spacing is not necessary.
Two copies of postal entries are required. Email entries must conform to Windows Word format.
Entries must NOT have been previously published, nor be copied from published sources and MUST be the sole, UNAIDED, work of the entrant.
ALL entries must be supported by an entry form.
Copyright belongs to the author but www.killie.co.uk reserves the right to publish any entry without fee. Photographs of winners may be used for publicity purposes.
The organisers reserve the right to re-allocate prize money in exceptional circumstances.
Closing dates for entries is 6pm (GMT) on 30th September 2005.
Winners will be notified in December 2005.
Paul A. Witty Outstanding Literature Award
Administerd by IRA's Special Interest Group, Reading for Gifted and Creative Students, this award recognizes excellence in original poetry or prose written by students.

Award: Elementary and secondary students whose work is selected will receive an award of not less than US$25 and a citation of merit.
SouthWest Writers: Young Writers Contest
Open to high school students living in New Mexico
There are four categories:

Award: Cash prizes are awarded in all four categories:
* 1st Place - $300
* 2nd Place - $200

Graduating Seniors in Any High School may enter. History, government and English students are particularly encouraged to participate.
The authors of the three best essays submitted will be the winners if the essays so warrant. They will be recognized and the prizes presented by the Sons of the Republic of Texas at the annual 2005 San Jacinto Celebration in Houston. The prizes will be scholarships to the college of each winner's choice or will be given to the student directly if he or she does not intend to attend a college or university.

Essays are to be no fewer than 1500 words nor more than 2000 words in length.
The student must follow the format of the Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian's Manual for Writers. Information must come from a reliable published source (magazine/book) and students must acknowledge the author and publisher. (see examples) The Internet is not considered to be an acceptable source.
