Bess Whitehead Scott Scholarships for Journalism Students The completed application form and attachments must be postmarked no later than the first Friday in April to be considered for funding beginning with the Fall semester of that calendar year. Fields of Study: Journalism/Mass Communication/Radio-Television-Film or similar designation.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be currently enrolled at one of the following universities: a) Baylor University b) Sam Houston State University c) Texas A & M University d) Texas State University e) University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, f) University of North Texas
  2. Must be a Junior or Senior in the fall of the same calendar year as the scholarship's spring application and awards process takes place.
  3. Must be pursuing study toward a degree in journalism or a related field


Silver Lake College High School Literary Contest

The Silver Lake College English Department is sponsoring its third annual literary contest open to all high school students. Entrants may submit works in one or both categories of poetry and/or fiction. Three winners from each category will be selected.

To mark the occasion of the English department’s addition of a new creative writing major and minor, first prize winners will receive $2000 renewable Silver Lake College scholarship. In addition to the scholarships, first prize selections from both categories will be published in Silver Reflections, a literary journal published annually by Silver Lake College. Cash prizes of $75 for second and $50 for third place will also be awarded. All awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held Thursday, February 9, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. in the Generose Enrichment Center located on the Silver Lake College campus, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Texas History Essay Contest

Graduating Seniors in Any High School may enter. History, government and English students are particularly encouraged to participate.

The authors of the three best essays submitted will be the winners if the essays so warrant. They will be recognized and the prizes presented by the Sons of the Republic of Texas at the annual 2005 San Jacinto Celebration in Houston. The prizes will be scholarships to the college of each winner's choice or will be given to the student directly if he or she does not intend to attend a college or university.

Deadline: postmarked on or before February 1 (annually).

Entry fee: none

Award:

First Prize - $3,000.00

Second Prize - $2,000.00

Third Prize - $1,000.00

Essays are to be no fewer than 1500 words nor more than 2000 words in length.

The student must follow the format of the Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian's Manual for Writers. Information must come from a reliable published source (magazine/book) and students must acknowledge the author and publisher. (see examples) The Internet is not considered to be an acceptable source.


Youth Arts Recognition and Talent Search Writing Awards

Open to high school seniors

Entry Fee: $30 for early applications and $40 for applications after the June 1st early deadline. There is a $5 discount if you apply online.

Prizes: 

ARTS Gold Awards: $10,000 each

First-Level Awards: $3,000 each

Second-Level Awards: $1,500 each

Third-Level Awards: $1,000 each

Fourth-Level Awards: $500 each

Fifth-Level Awards: $100 each

In addition, an unlimited number of $100 Honorable Mention Awards and Merit Awards of Recognition (with no monetary value) are granted to non ARTS Week participants.
